Sky Stadium to host two Wellington Lions fixtures in 2024

Home fixtures at Sky Stadium will remain a feature for the Wellington Lions during the 2024 Bunnings National Provincial Championship (NPC).

New Zealand Rugby (NZR) today announced the 2024 Bunnings NPC schedule, which will commence on 9 August.

The first three home matches for the Wellington Lions will be held at Porirua Park before returning to Sky Stadium on Saturday, 21 September, where the Lions will host Bay of Plenty, and then on Saturday, 5 October, in a showdown with Hawke’s Bay in what will be a replay of the 2023 Bunnings NPC semi-final.

If the Wellington Lions commence onto the playoff rounds, matches will be played at Sky Stadium.

Wellington Rugby CEO Tony Giles said Wellington Rugby has worked with Sky Stadium to foster the delivery of provincial rugby at a community level, and that this is an exciting opportunity for rugby in the Wellington region.

“To be in a position to play five consecutive games at Sky Stadium in the run up to NPC glory, as well as community delivery with round-robin fixtures, is a very unique opportunity and one we thank Sky Stadium for supporting,” Giles said.

Sky Stadium CEO, Warrick Dent said, “We are pleased to be able to work with Wellington Rugby in their efforts to take matches to the community, and we are looking forward to hosting the Lions’ final two round robin-matches and hopefully a run at the finals series here at Sky Stadium.”
