Wellington Lions enjoy dominant win over Otago

The Wellington Lions put together their best performance of the 2019 Mitre 10 Cup season after they enjoyed a dominant 54-24 win over Otago at Westpac Stadium.

Dynamic wing Wes Goosen scored a hat-trick of tries as the Lions scored eight tries in the bonus point victory.

Goosen got things started almost from the kick-off before Alex Fidow scored the first of his two tries.

The Lions had a bonus point inside the first half hour as they scored their fourth try while they added a fifth just before the break to enjoy a 35-5 halftime lead.

They continued their domination in the second half as Goosen completed his hat-trick off an intercept as the home side blew out to a 54-10 lead before Otago came back with two late tries.

There was plenty to like about the Lions performance as their attack worked really well at times as they stretched the Otago defence off the back of a host of line breaks.

The Lions now prepare to head to Eden Park on Sunday to play defending champions Auckland.

Wellington Lions 54 (W Goosen 3, A Fidow 2, K Hauiti-Parapara, B Lam, P Umaga-Jensen tries; T Renata 7 cons) Otago 24 (H Purdy, A Morris-Lome, M Collins, M Mafi tries; J Ioane 2 cons).
