Wellington Rugby Football Union mourn the loss of Norm Hewitt

Wellington Rugby Football Union are saddened by the loss of Wellington Rugby icon, Norm Hewitt.

WRFU CEO Tony Giles, remarked on the legacy that Hewitt leaves behind.

“Norm was a stalwart supporter of Wellington Rugby, and an iconic figure in our community. He was a proud and passionate man, who took care of his family as well as the wider rugby community.”

“His incredible legacy extends to his son, Alex, a talented young member of the Wellington Rugby Academy. We’ll be here to support Alex and the Hewitt whānau in any way we can through this difficult time.”

Hewitt made his provincial debut in 1988 and went on to play for Hawke’s Bay and Southland before landing in Wellington in 1999. He played 31 games for the Wellington Lions and captained the side from 1999-2001.

Hewitt is famously remembered for playing on with a broken arm and effectively leading the Lions to their first NPC final win against Canterbury in 2000.

Alongside his stellar Provincial career, Hewitt earned over 60 caps for the Hurricanes, and as All Black #938, he made 23 appearances over 6 years.

Following his retirement from rugby, he became heavily involved in violence prevention programmes and advocacy, working for the SPCA as an animal cruelty officer, and in schools as an anti-violence publicity officer.
